GritFall, the grittiest, & Raz Fresco - Griptape
Have you ever wondered what an Iron Man infinite from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would feel like in the form of a rap EP? Well, BKRSCLB's newest member, Gritfall, aka the grittiest, may have an answer for you.
The emcee unleashed a Raz Fresco-produced EP entitled Griptape on Friday (August 19, 2022). Griptape steers a breezy sixteen-minute run-time across nine tracks, two hooks (maybe?), and raps. Just raps.
Fresco, being one of the most underrated emcees/producers of hip-hop's beloved Blog Era, provides Gritfall with almost entirely drumless compositions strung together by the strength of meticulously crafted samples. And with a project aptly titled Griptape, Grit rarely loses his footing on his musical skateboard .
Swerving in and out of pockets and kick-flipping through lip twisting unabashed verses, the rapper's flow and double-stacked rhyme schemes echo the brilliance of early Pro Era and Earl Sweatshirt, which is great company to be in.
The only thing on this EP I could do without would be FiftyNine’s awkwardly performed hook on “Animal Crackers.” It almost takes me out of the song entirely before being drawn back by Grit. Overall though, this project is super dope.
It's no secret that I long for music of the same caliber as the Blog Era and the Golden Era periods of hip-hop. Two of my all-time favorites. However, Gritfall, and other young spitters like him, have me excited for rap's inevitable renaissance era. Rap’s future is bright.
