In Search Of Magazine Playlist Mk. 3
We're back with the third iteration of the ISO 10, and while the diverse array of genres may be chaotic, we take pride in that!
Jae Skeese is the head of the latest playlist with a relentless barrage of rhymes in “Seek/Find” from his Revolver Ocelot project. If you're new to the Buffalo MC, consider this one of the best possible ways to be introduced, delivering with supremely skilled execution. The scary thing is? Drumwork Music Group’s Skeese ain’t even hit his prime yet. But, as the emcee, himself, would say, “everything 4 Weeze.”
Next, we got “Bitter” and “Shameless” from LAYA and Avenoir, respectively. Two sides of the R&B coin that find each artist tapping into the influence left behind by Aaliyah, Timbaland, and Missy Elliott’s greatness, presenting the 90s style with their own exceptional twist. Both artists' beautiful records prove that Diddy didn't know what the hell he was talking about when he uttered, "R&B is dead." It's clearly in a constant state of evolution and experimentation. LAYA and Avenoir are sure to leave their marks on the very much alive genre once they get the world behind their talents.
And speaking of experimentation, the fantastic experimental rapper MAVI joins the newest playlist with his latest single, "Baking Soda," produced by Monte Booker. "Baking Soda" is a dizzying spell laid over Booker's soulful production, presenting a new yet familiar layer to MAVI's growing artistic reputation as he gears up for his forthcoming LP, Laughing So Hard It Hurts. This nigga MAVI can really spit, check the genius on that.
Zyah Belle is that girl. And with every subsequent project, she ensures those who know don't forget it, and newcomers are sure to learn that. So please show sis some love and spin her project, Yam Grier, til you get dizzy. Belle's "Goofy" is featured on the ISO 10 with the hypnotizing single seeing the singer and Tempest declaring their disdain for tedious men- you know, the worst kind. “Goofy” transforms into groovy as Belle's number is followed by Dave-B's "Groove Theory," seeing the artist break out the two-step and laidback melodies.
Infectious and skittery hi-hats litter the track, and we find Dave-B in his usual bag. "Ice cold, but it get a little colder," he confidently boasts as the song invites you to vibe your worries away. Which is important — especially in this economy. "2NLuv" keeps the party going as Jenevieve returns with a track from her latest project, Rendevous EP. Jenevieve enlists help from Benziboy and offers a glitzy pop-tinged dance number, that is equally playful and sexy.
Newcomer Summer Vee joins the playlist with the awe-inducing “Judas”. I'm not going to lie; this track left me mesmerized. The live instruments, Vee's soulful yet commanding voice, and the production done by Kenny Sterling make for a beautiful product. Summer's " Judas " performance immediately evokes thoughts of the legendary Sade with a jazzy composition and a toe-tapping baseline that'll transport you to a night full of wine and high spirits, which is kinda funny considering the lyrical content of the song. Anyhow, we need a Summer Vee project, shorty is something special.
Aaron May's "No Recognition" offers a subtle change of pace for the collection of dope songs. The Houston artist's southern drawl and serenely chill vibe brings us a banger that will undoubtedly find the rapper on his way to national prominence. Remember who said that. Finally, Unocoolbro and Journeybthareason round out the playlist with their track "h e a r t." The triumphant single finds the duo spitting encouraging rhymes over remarkable production, the type of beat that you'd find during a film's end credits — truly triumphant. Unocoolbro appeared on my radar by way of my high school homie, Unique, and it's truly a blessing that it happened. He and Journey can RAP rap, and it seems "h e a r t" is only the beginning.
